| More than 75 million Americans live with serious pain. Fifty
million of these people are suffering from chronic pain each year while
another 25 million face acute pain secondary to injury or surgery. Unfortunately,
25 percent of these patients do not believe their doctor knows how to control
their pain, approximately 20 percent feel that their doctor does not consider
their pain a problem, and one in eight state their doctor never asks them
about their pain. Moreover, the measurement and management of pain is diverse
and challenging. In the mid-1990s, the concept of “Pain; The 5th Vital Sign”
was adopted by the American Pain Society to increase awareness of the need
for pain assessment and treatment among health care professionals. This
awareness has increased the frequency of pain assessment. The Joint Commission
on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards approved,
in 1999 mandate, that hospitals and other health care institutions use pain
as a vital sign providing an impetus to overcome institutional barriers
to effective pain assessment and treatment.
The benefits of effective pain management are simple and straightforward.
Effective pain management can:
- Increase patient satisfaction
- Increase the speed of recovery
- Decrease hospital length of stay
- Decrease overall healthcare costs
- Decrease the likelihood of chronic pain
- Decrease the likelihood of complications
- Increase productivity
- Decrease suffering
